Surrounded by olive groves and the prestigious vineyards of Chianti, Siena is one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany. Set on three hills, the city is drawn together by atmospheric alleyways and steep, stone steps. The circular sloping Piazza del Campo stands at its very heart, whilst the majestic Duomo and imposing St Maria della Scala both serve as enthralling historic landmarks. Famed for the "Palio", the annual historic horse-race that take place on 2 July and 16 August, it is also home to one of the oldest Universities in Europe which gives the centre a vibrant, youthful, atmosphere. With countless restaurants, art galleries and boutique stores, Siena is the perfect destination for a full day out.
Beyond the city itself you will discover the landscape of Chianti, take a little time to stop off at beautiful fortress towns of San Gimignano and Monteriggioni with their old walls, medieval towers and inspiring communities of artisans.
